Jasper takes him to his secret glade in the bush, and it's here that Charlie bears witness to Jasper's horrible discovery. So when Jasper begs for his help, Charlie eagerly steals into the night by his side, terribly afraid but desperate to impress. Rebellious, mixed-race and solitary, Jasper is a distant figure of danger and intrigue for Charlie. His visitor is Jasper Jones, an outcast in the regional mining town of Corrigan. Fevre dream book5/12/2023 George Raymond Richard "R.R." Martin was born September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. Here is the spellbinding tale of a vampire’s quest to unite his race with humanity, of a garrulous riverman’s dream of immortality, and of the undying legends of the steamboat era and a majestic, ancient river. Not until the maiden voyage of his new sidewheeler Fevre Dream would Marsh realize he had joined a mission both more sinister, and perhaps more noble, than his most fantastic nightmare.and mankind’s most impossible dream. But the promise of both gold and a grand new boat that could make history crushed his resolve-coupled with the terrible force of York’s mesmerizing gaze. It was too full of secrets that spelled danger. And they are to be none of Marsh’s concern-no matter how bizarre, arbitrary, or capricious his actions may prove. York has his own reasons for wanting to traverse the powerful Mississippi. Nor does he care that he won’t earn back his investment in a decade. For York doesn’t care that the icy winter of 1857 has wiped out all but one of Marsh’s dilapidated fleet. But when he meets the hauntingly pale, steely-eyed Joshua York, he is certain. When struggling riverboat captain Abner Marsh receives an offer of partnership from a wealthy aristocrat, he suspects something’s amiss.

Modern times by paul johnson5/12/2023 If he had been a traditional social conservative, or an economic conservative of the Stockman-Laffer school, one could accept his biases and move on. I did not begrudge him his tendency to paint all collectivist thought with a broad brush, if only because the world needed an appropriately sober look at the crimes of Lenin as well as Stalin.īut by the time we get to the 1930s, Johnson's oddball rejection of all modernist trends became a bit much to take. In the first couple chapters, I was ready to give this book an instant 5 stars, due to the author's ability to integrate economic, cultural, and political trends in a coherent whole. An agnostic wag once said, "Any fool can make fun of evangelicals, but if you really want to see a crazed doctrine, look for a conservative Catholic, preferably a conservative Jesuit." This certainly holds true for Paul Johnson, who mars what could have been a superbly written book of breathtaking scope, with points of view that aren't merely limited or blinkered, but downright crazed at times.

The way i used to be by amber smith5/12/2023 Marion Zimmer Bradley: The Mists of Avalon (1983) is the classic of modern reinterpretations of the Arthurian legend through the points of view of powerful women behind Camelot, namely Morgaine, Gwenhwyfar, and Morgause.Thomas Berger: Arthur Rex (1978) is a tragicomic retelling of the Arthurian legend. The book was passed to Arthur's true son, and from Arthur's son came the Knights Templar. In this case, Arthur was betrayed when he refused to pass the book on to his illegitimate son. Lewis: The Revenge of the Shadow King (2006) reveals an alternate history of Arthur who was betrayed and murdered by his half-sister Morgan le Fay, who is portrayed as an evil immortal being known as the Black Witch, for possession of a sacred book which had been passed down father-to-son for thousands of years.

Straight man by richard russo5/12/2023 The main character’s father, haunts the book like a ghost and he does not appear in person until the end of the novel. His mother also lives in town and the word is that his father, separated from her, may be moving back in. One married daughter lives in town and they worry about her financial situation and that she might be in an abusive relationship. He is in the “sandwich generation” with a wife, whom he loves, who is a school principal, and two daughters. It’s really an academic novel, centered on a 49-year old professor (mid-life crisis?) at a lower-tier university, perhaps a branch campus, in a by-passed town in Pennsylvania. Another good story from Richard Russo – I previously reviewed Empire Falls.

Oral History by Lee Smith5/12/2023 From the first female voice in the novel to the last, the reader can detect Smith's progress toward and portrayal of female characters who are both mothers and sexually expressive, those who bridge what Rozsika Parker in Mother Love/Mother Hate (1995) calls the "cultural split maintained between the mother and the sexually desiring woman" (259-260). In fact, the Cantrell family curse, which is the impetus for the action of the novel, is based on the repudiation and exploitation of female sexuality. In Oral History, Smith shows how society's rejection and condemnation of openly sexual women, particularly older women, shapes the oral history of a particular geographical region. Choosing to center the novel on the healing presence of the sacred-sexual Dory Cantrell, Smith attributes mythic qualities not only to Dory but also to other women characters in the novel. Smith moves smoothly from one vantage point to another, providing the fabric to be pieced together by the reader in order to learn the past, present, and even future of the Cantrell family. Lee Smith's fifth novel, Oral History (1983), covers over a hundred-year time period and is told from thirteen different points of view: seven first person oral narratives and one first-person written narrative interspersed among four pieces told by third-person narrators, sometimes omniscient and sometimes limited to a single perspective.
